The idea
DUST is being designed as a persistent, real-time, top-down 2D survival MMO: procedurally generated worlds that keep running 24/7, whether or not you are in them.
You arrive knowing almost nothing. What you learn about the world, you learn by going out into it: where the water is, which ruin is worth the walk, who else uses that road. Everything of value is physical. It has a location; it can be carried, stored, stolen and lost. Other players are the deepest system: conflict comes from resources, travel and territory, not from a lobby.
These are the ideas the game is built around. None of them is playable yet — only a first local exploration prototype exists; see where things stand.
- Persistent world
- One world that keeps running. Bases, stashes and consequences stay in place while you are away.
- Procedural geography
- Worlds generated from a seed, meant to be learned, remembered and navigated. Procedural does not mean random noise.
- Exploration
- The map is not given. Knowing where something is should be an advantage that someone else does not have.
- Loot
- Value sits at specific places in the world: resources, wildlife, monuments. The best places are the most contested.
- Crafting
- What you bring home becomes tools, equipment and, much later, machinery.
- Bases
- Structures that physically exist in the world and can be found, defended and lost.
- PvP
- No arena, no queue. Fights happen where value is, between people who chose to be there.
- Raids
- What is worth protecting is worth taking. Possession is always at risk.
- Technological progression
- Survive, craft, build, power, automate. A long road, with the survival world always coming first.
Three of six pillars
Three of the pillars DUST is built on.
-
I
SURVIVE
Your character is a body in a dangerous world, not a cursor above it. Staying alive is the first problem, and it never fully goes away.
-
II
DISCOVER
The world begins unknown. Places are worth remembering, routes are worth learning, and the top-down view shows you nothing you have not earned.
UNKNOWN → DISCOVERED → EXPLORED → MAPPED
-
III
POSSESS
Value is physical. What you gather, find, make or take has a place in the world, and whoever finds that place can take it from you. To own something is to protect it.
The other three pillars: bases that physically exist, PvP that emerges from the world rather than from a matchmaker, and a world that does not pause when you log off.
The loop
One loop, run again and again.
- Need
- Leave safety
- Explore
- Gather / Hunt / Loot
- Find value
- Accept risk
- Return alive
- Store
- Craft / Build / Research
- Become more capable
- Leave again
The player must leave safety to progress.
Safety is a place you return to, not a place you progress in. Nothing meaningful is produced by staying home.
Status
In development. Early prototype stage. No public build yet.
- What exists today is the foundation — the vision and its rules, the technical direction — and a first local prototype: one procedurally generated world you can walk through and reveal by line of sight, with one ruin to find. Placeholder graphics, no other system, not playable on this site.
- No screenshots here, because the prototype is engineering evidence, not the game. Everything above describes what DUST is designed to become, not what it is.
- No release date. None has been set.
- DUST is a working title, not final branding.
- Progress is recorded loop by loop in a plain development log.
